Having been here a month (notwithstanding this weekend where I paid a visit back home) I can say I’ve probably logged over 100 meals in New York. Whether at one of the dining halls on campus or a nearby food cart, a restaurant in the Upper West Side or cooking up some groceries, food has definitely been a priority for me, as it probably is for you. I thought I would mention a few of the meals I’ve had here:
It was my first meal in New York and the place still ranks among my favourite places ever! A creation of the famed restauranteur Danny Meyer, Shake Shack is a fast food place with multiple locations in the city (my favourite being near Times Square), serving flat-top burgers, waffle fries and, of course, some of the best milkshakes you will ever try. It’s comparatively low prices ensure that there is always a line OUT THE DOOR at most hours of the day.
Here I am, finally happy to be at the front of the line
I’ve been on the prowl for some good sushi ever since Japan. Toronto definitely has some amazing places, but I was blown away when I went to Nobu 67. The authentic Japanese cuisine was juxtaposed with hundreds of fast-talking New Yorkers, suited up from work. Wish I had more pictures of the food, but it was gone before I had a chance…hmm wonder how that happened?
Sometimes you don’t feel like going out to eat. Luckily, I requested a dorm with its own kitchen, which definitely comes in handy when trying to save a few bucks here and there. My roommate Zhenchuan and I just finished a pretty tasty dish of spaghetti and meatballs.
When my parents were here we went to Sarabeth’s before I moved into the dorms. Amazing breakfast place – bit pricey, but oh so good; perfect for a brunch date. Also they have these lemon-ricotta pancakes that I’ve had to replicate with this recipe courtesy of cHOW
And lastly, this isn’t a food place, but definitely one of the highlights of my exchange so far. 4 hours of waiting, in line? totally worth it! I think the picture is pretty explanatory.
Until next time! – Sam
